What Is a Steam Mop?

Steam mops are devices used in homes and offices, etc. not only to clean but also disinfect parts of the building which includes but not limited to the floors and other hard surfaces. A steam mop generates steam to clean floors and carpets. Generally, detergents or cleaning chemicals are not required in the cleaning process only water, as the heat from the generated steam will clean the floors.

How It Works

The steam is produced in the water tank of the steam mop.  When the steam is hot enough in terms of temperature (the water in the water tank can stretch to 240 degrees Fahrenheit) It moves down to the mop head and inside the microfiber pads connected to the mop head employing a trigger mechanism on the handle of the steam mop.

This produces a jet of dry steam, which produces moisture in the microfiber pad, which allows the drawing up of dirt into the pad. The steam breaks down the dirt and stains and they are absorbed into the microfiber pads. You can then clean the pad later.  Sometimes steam mops have one single jets other have several.

The heat generated from the steam can kill up to 99.9% of bacteria and germs. That is why the steam mop is used to disinfect floors.

Steam mops are good for most hard floor surfaces. Therefore, the steam mop should not be used on unsealed wooden surfaces.

Advantages of Buying a Steam Mop

1. Safe to use for Children and Pets

Steam mops uses only water to clean your floor. No harmful chemical residuals is left on the floor from chemicals or detergent.  Therefore, the floors and surfaces are safe to touch for children and pets.  It’s also safe for the environment since harmful chemicals are not used.

2. Able to Sanitize floors killing bacteria and germs

Steam mops can clean and remove dirt from your floors.  They also have the ability of sanitizing the floors and killing bacteria and germs, which an ordinary mop cannot do. This is possible because they are able to generate super-heated steam.  To further sweeten the deal, steam mops can kill allergens like dust mites.

3. Better Than a Traditional Mop

A steam mop will clean better than a traditional mop.  When you employ traditional mop to clean your floors together with a bucket, you are returning dirty water to the floor.  With a steam mop, the microfiber pads are absorbing the dirt as you clean.  It will also sanitize your floors killing 99.9% of germs and harmful bacteria.

4. Light and Easy to Use

If you have a back problem situation, steam mops are much easier to use than a mop and bucket.  Steam mop are very light and easy to move around.  They often have adjustable handles, which you can change to suit your height.

5. Save Storage Space

Steam mops require less space to store than traditional mop and bucket. If you employ traditional cleaning, you have to find a room to store the mop, bucket and cleaning agents.

What to Look For In a Steam Mop

Steam mops have increasingly become popular.  They have the capacity to clean floors without the use of chemicals and detergents. All that is needed is a power source and tap water in order to clean. If you want to buy one of these, you need to know what you need to look for in one of these devices.

Many models and features are available, so you may want to consider the following things before purchasing a steam mop:

  1. Reputable Brand Name

Steam mops are produced by many different companies and marketed under various brands. A brand with a good reputation does not always mean that its products are free from defects or drawbacks. Not minding the brand, you still need to do a little homework on them by checking the features, performance, warranty, and customer reviews of the product that you want to buy.

  1. Power and Performance

Nearly all steam mops have the same wattage and therefore the same power.  The best thing to do is choose the Steam mop with the most wattage as this will have the most power. Performance is also dependent on whether the steam comes from one nozzle on the steam mop or from various sources on the steam mop.  What to also take note of is how much steam is generated in the mop and how many bursts are discharged.  Some models employ are pump-driven mechanism which works when you push the mop and others driven by using a trigger control.

A steam mop requires time to transform the water into ready-to-use steam. A good steam mop can do this process quickly, making it possible to begin the cleaning job right away. Besides, some steam mops need to cool-down between refills, but it is not a big problem if you appliance can quickly warm-up.

  1. Weight

It is more difficult to move a heavy steam mop around compared to the lighter counterparts. The size, materials, and parts will affect the overall weight of the appliance. It is easier to move, lift and maneuver the lightweight model with less efforts thus you can cover more areas in the house more quickly.

The main factor that increases the weight of a steam mop is the size of the water tank.  A larger tank when fill of water will be considerably heavier than a mop with a smaller tank.  The advantage with a larger tank is that you do not have to keep stopping your steam cleaning to refill the tank.  A smaller tank will allow you to move the steam mop around easier, particularly if you have mobility issues. If you are currently in a store for a steam mop, you can try the product to make sure that the weight is comfortable.

  1. Water reservoir

A small water reservoir is lightweight, but you may need to refill it many times before you completely clean a large area. On the other hand, large water reservoir is heavy but you can cover more areas before it needs a refill. There are removable and non-removable water reservoirs. The removable variant can be taken off from the main unit, filled with tap water, and reattached. Some people may find it too cumbersome and prefer the non-removable type, so they can refill the reservoir without removing it.

  1. Various Steam Setting

Different steam mops have different steam settings.  You can use different settings based on the type or nature of the floor. These setting are useful as you can set the lowest setting when cleaning delicate floors and the highest setting when removing ingrained dirt from a hard surface.  Always check the manufacturer’s instructions when buying your steam mop.

  1. On and off switch

A power switch turns the appliance on or off instantly, so it is more controllable. Without this switch, you may need to pump the cleaner for few minutes before you can start using it, which is exhausting. There are also certain models that feature triggers, meaning you have to pull the trigger to release steam. You can control the appliance better with a trigger, but it can be demanding especially when you need to clean a large room.

  1. Shape and Size of the Mop Head

Steam mops generally come with a revolving head, which can rotate 180 degrees, which makes it easier to clean around furniture. A revolving mop head improves maneuverability, which is greatly useful if you have to clean many difficult-to-reach areas such as under a cabinet or other furniture pieces. Mop heads come in several different shapes and size.  If small and triangular they are much easier to maneuver and fit into tight spaces like toilets.  The larger rectangular mop heads are more effective when you have large floor surface areas to clean.

However, if you only need to clean a room that has very few furniture or appliances, a rotating feature is not very important. In fact, you may want to use a big mop head that covers more areas in a single stroke.

  1. Cord Length and design

Look for the length of power cord that comes with the steam cleaner.  A long cord means that you can reach and clean a large room or a couple of smaller rooms without changing the plug.  A short cord will mean that you have to keep unplugging or plugging back into the steam mop.  Alternatively, you can use an extension socket.  However, if you use this you may run into health and safety issues.  Generally, a length of at least 6 meters is reasonable.

Steam mops are manufactured with various handle designs and length. Some products have fixed handles, while others have the removable or height-adjustable ones. The adjustable type is commonly more suitable for most people since it is easy to change the handle height or length depending on individual’s preferences, so the cleaning job becomes more comfortable and less tiring. An adjustable or removable handle also makes it easier for you to store the appliance.

  1. Low Profile Cleaners

Make sure your steam mop had a low profile to enable it to steam under low lying furniture.

  1. Mop Head Cleaning Pads

There are two types of cover or cleaning pads including reusable and disposable. If you clean your floors often, the reusable one is cost-effective and environment-friendly since you can use it many times before a replacement is necessary. You can wash it after each cleaning and use the cleaning pad again. The disposable type is for one-time cleaning job only, so it is faster and easier. It is also important that you look for a cover that is easy to attach, for example one that uses Velcro strap.

  1. Stand Alone Mop

Endeavor to buy a steam mop that will stand on its own.  This means you do not have to prop it up against a wall when you are not using it.  This avoids the probability of tripping over it.

  1. Two Sided Mops

Some mops are designed so that when one side is dirty you can flip it over and use the other side.  This saves you time because you can carry on cleaning without having to change the cleaning pad or cloth.

  1. Sanitizing the Floors

Steam mops will sanitize your floors so killing bacteria.  However, you need to keep the mop Hoover over the area you want to sanitize for a number of seconds depending on the make of the mop.

  1. Attachments

You need to decide what you want to clean with the steam mop so that you have the correct attachments. Some accessories are usually included such as additional mop heads, brushes, cord, carpet glider, cleaning pads and other tools for upholstery or window cleaning. However, the price can increase if the steam mop includes many additional accessories.

You can get steam mops, which will just clean your floors and refresh your carpets.  Others will transform into a hand held steam cleaner.  With the hand held steam cleaner, you can steam clean upper surfaces.  These upper surfaces can include kitchen tops, cookers, bathrooms and showers. You can also get attachments to clean windows, to clean upholstery and clothes.

  1. Indicator Lights

Indicator lights usually function to help you notice the water temperature, water amount left in the reservoir, and steam mop overheating. Some models use such indicators to tell you that the steam is read (light comes on when the right temperature had reach the correct temperature). Without indicator lights, you have to check everything manually.

  1. How often do you tend to use the Steam Mop?

If you intend to, use the mop frequently it is worth investing in a more expensive model.  If you only intend to the mop you can consider buying a cheaper model.

  1. Other Features

Consider whether the steam mop has built in scrubbing brushes, which can help to remove struck on dirt. You do need to sweep or vacuum before you use the steam mop.  You can buy a steam mop, which does this as well as the steaming.  Overall, I would recommend using a separate brush or vacuum for this.

Conclusion

So there you have it – the ultimate guide to buying the best steam mop. The market basically provides any brand and model of steam mop that you need. There are different price tags attached to the products from the least to most expensive, yet the best for you is not always the one that breaks the bank. For best results, you have to read steam mop reviews and know what kind of steam mop that you really need before making a purchase.

You want a steam mop with on and off operation. There are some that you have to pump for a few minutes before use. Just get the ones that you can turn on else your arm is going to get tired pumping it all the time.

Get a model with multiple mod heads. These are good for various types of floors, the ceiling, and even carpets and rugs. You even want multiple versions of the same mop head as they can get dirty. Using a few fresh ones will do a better job than just using one.

You need a light weight model. You want to be able to carry it up and down stairs and even lift it above your head in order to steam higher up.

You need to get a steam mop that just requires water and heat. You do not want to have to purchase a special blend in order for the mop to work else it will become very expensive to use over time.

Find a steam mop with a quick warm up. You don’t want to have to wait over five minutes for you to be able to start cleaning your floors.

Get a mop that can be refilled during use. There is no steam mop that will do all your floors without being filled up again. Some take more than three minutes to refill because you have to wait for them to cool down. Find a model that can be filled up while in use so that you can keep cleaning versus stopping and waiting.
